Interlock Tower taps Tristan Eaton for property murals

ATLANTA, Ga. — Interlock Tower, the second phase of The Interlock mixed-use district in West Midtown, Atlanta, has engaged world-renowned muralist Tristan Eaton for its property murals.

Now complete, the two Interlock Tower murals are the first works of art in Atlanta for Eaton. The artist has painted more than 100 murals all over the globe, including in cities such as Moscow, Paris and Los Angeles, among others.

“They gave me a lot of creative freedom, which was really nice, and I had two big walls to play with,” said Eaton. “I took a different approach for each one — one is a really long landscape composition where I can tell stories inside the letter forms, and I wanted to give references to the history here and about Atalanta the Greek Goddess, which hasn’t really been done before.”

One mural features Atalanta the archer and hunter goddess with a modern twist and the other piece has bright colors and designs. Both are located in the open park space of the property.

“It’s a real blessing to be able to do this kind of work. I’m an outsider wherever I go, and I try to paint something for that community, and I try to take that seriously and do a lot of research. Hopefully, I leave behind work that becomes a part of people’s identity, enriches their daily life and lifts them out of a landscape higher than just the land, bricks and concrete, and shows that there’s humanity and creativity amongst us and hopefully that inspires people.”

About Tristan Eaton

After graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York, Eaton built upon his experience designing toys at the age of 18 for Fisher Price and co-founded the legendary Kid Robot. There, he created two of its most iconic designs, the Dunny and Munny, solidifying himself as one of the founders of the designer toy movement carried forth by contemporary pop artists such as KAWS today.

Shortly after Kid Robot, Eaton founded Thunderdog Studios, where he created original art and design work for major clients like Nike, Universal and luxury watch brand Hublot among many others. His highly sought after style and work ethic in the field continues to inspire confidence in his clients and admiration among his peers while he blurs the lines between commercial and fine art.

Eaton is perhaps best known for his large-scale public murals, found throughout the world from New York to Paris to Shanghai, which he executes in freehand spray paint; a technical and personal nod to his own history and respect for graffiti culture, while honoring traditional painting and muralism with his thoughtful and dynamic subject matter and compositions.

All of these experiences become touchstones in Eaton’s fine art practice where techniques new and old meet unusual and innovative ideas paired with an assortment of methods and materials both traditional and modern, all of which find a home and harmony in his work.

Eaton’s work can be seen in the Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) permanent collection as well as the Cooper Hewitt Museum and Long Beach Museum of Art.
